Persian Cat

A Persian cat is one of the oldest breeds of cats. Persian cats are most known for their long, full coats and their very short muzzles. Other typical characteristics include large eyes (which seem even larger with their flat muzzles), short legs, and wide set ears.

A Persian kitten will require a little more grooming than other regular kittens. Most kittens need a little extra help with grooming, depending on how much time they have had with their mother, but with Persian kittens long coats they do require the assistance of their human companions. It is suggested that Persian cat owners should spend some time every single day on grooming. Examine its fur to make sure things are not caught up in it (you might be amazed at what Persian cat owner have found!). Brush its coat daily to prevent it from getting tangled and matted. Bathing is also a requirement as fur of this length needs to be kept clean. Especially when they are kittens, pet owners should pay special attention to the hind quarters. It is not uncommon to find fecal matter matted into their hair and daily bathing may be necessary for the first few months. Pet owners should remember that it is a sign of love to groom their cats, Persian cats especially.

Naming a cat is always fun and there are many Persian cat names that are popular. Names like Fluffy, Puffy, Powder Puff, and Snowball are common because they reflect the fullness of their fur, but don’t be afraid to choose an original name. You don’t have to name your Persian kitten based on its physical appearance.

The most common cat health Persian problem is the occurrence of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). It is quite common Persian cat health problem and is found in many other exotic cat breeds as well. An inherited kidney disease, it is most easily detected through ultra-sound and has a 98% accuracy rate. Testing should occur around 10 months of age. If testing is not done and a Persian cat does have PKD it will not become apparent on later in its life. PKD is a slow, progressive disease that is inherited.
